When did we get the idea?
Somewhere in 2005, two young Romanians receive a scholarship to study political science in France. They quickly realized that the scholarship was not enough to pay a decent rent.
With money from their parents, the two manage to find and rent their first two-room apartment, below the market price, because the bedroom could not be lived in. Even then, the rent was enormous, and in order to continue their studies, they had to find a solution.
Idea
The idea came there, in France. They started posting ads on the Internet for 1-2 euros… something that was revolutionary at the time, in order to find a roommate.
After a few days, they started receiving e-mails with requests for different renting periods of 2-7 days. After a month of guests who “stayed for the day” they realized that they had made more money than the one-month rent, for the whole apartment.
In the fall of 2007, they invest time and money in a website, through which it was possible to promote apartments and houses for rent. After a year of working on the website and many efforts to find locations, they realize that, in Romania, this business is “a little” harder than in France!… Many owners did not even want to hear about the concept of renting in the hotel accommodation regimen… everyone had houses only for sale, making it a year of real estate boom.
The crisis and the installation of the concept in Romania as well
In 2008, the financial crisis set in Romania, a situation that created an opportunity that few would have foreseen. The first “residential complexes” were left with dozens or even hundreds of unsold apartments that no one wanted to buy. The owners/builders of these complexes were their first accommodation offer providers, the destination being: apartment hotels.
The offer was received well by young people who had access to the Internet and trusted to book a stay online, had small children or wanted more privacy than in a hotel. In the years that followed, in certain areas, even tourists caught on the business idea, and started buying apartments from these constructors, even during the crisis, with the same destination: apartment hotels.
In other countries
In the same period, the founders of AIRBNB launch their first website, sometime around the fall of 2008: Airbedandbreakfast.com which will later transform into airbnb.com. In the following years, in all corners of the world, a multitude of websites that offer hotel apartments appear, some considered more important than others, such as HomeAway, FlipKey by Tripadvisor or Holliday Lettings. Including the largest booking platform at that time, Booking.com, offering accommodation opportunities for apartments, houses, cabins and even hotel bungalows.
In the following years, KeyStay.com was born, a platform built and optimized according to the trends, accumulating real and direct experience along with the world of hotel hospitality.
Using powerful resources such as booking platforms and partner agencies, today, KeyStay.com manages over 500 hotel accommodations in Romania, in cities like Bucharest, Brasov, Constanta, but also areas such as Poiana Brasov, Mamaia or locations situated even in the Danube Delta.
